Gambetta Square

Place Gambetta is a central square where people come to relax on the grass and enjoy the shops and cafés. The current appearance dates back to the reconstruction of the 1950s. But this idea of a central square can be found since Antiquity!

Moreover, if you look closely at this square, you will see two small round stone installations covered by glass.

These are what we call "the eyes", that is to say skylights that allow us to see the remains of the Gallo-Roman forum under Place Gambetta. These remains are under our feet and are more than 2000 years old!

A leap into the past, when Amiens was Gallo-Roman and was called at that time Samarobriva, which means "the bridge over the Somme". The Forum was the political, religious, civic, economic center of the city, so already at that time, Place Gambetta played a central role in the city and this will only be confirmed later.

It is a place that has always concentrated strong activities, notably economic, even today we have the rue des 3 cailloux right next door.
