Malmaison

In the Middle Ages, La Malmaison was the residence of the bailiff of Amiens. The current building, built in 1541 and enlarged in 1573, was the seat of royal justice until the French Revolution.

The origin of the name Malamaison comes from the Latin "mallum publicum" which in the Carolingian era designated the place of the Assembly of Justice. The Bailiwick of Amiens, created by King Philip Augustus in 1193, was one of the oldest and most important in the Kingdom.

The building was destroyed by German bombings on 19 May 1940 at the start of the Second World War, only the façade remained. It was fully integrated into a new building after 1945. The façade is protected as a historic monument: classified by decree of 21 February 1941 1 .

The building now houses the finance department of the city of Amiens.
