The Perret Tower

The Perret Tower was designed by the architect Auguste Perret in 1942 as part of the reconstruction project for Place Alphonse-Fiquet and Amiens train station following the massive destruction at the start of the Second World War.

After the earthworks and foundations ("foundations plunging more than 19 meters underground") began in July 1949, the first stone was laid on May 22, 1950 in the presence of Eugène Claudius-Petit, Minister of Reconstruction, who welcomed the birth of "the tallest skyscraper in Europe."

The construction of the tower was financed by public funds from the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning, at a cost of 225 million francs.

The tower was completed in March 1952: a ceremony, including a mass, was held to mark the event; its inauguration was in fact postponed eight years later.
