The Rambures Castle

With its enormous round towers, machicolations, and rampart walk, this castle is a remarkable example of 15th-century military architecture.

The name Les Rambures first appeared in recorded history in the mid-11th century. Since then, several buildings have been erected on the Rambures family lands, away from the old feudal mound.

The first "brick and stone" castle in France to feature defensive innovations, the current castle was completed in the 15th century, all against the backdrop of the Hundred Years' War.

The design of this unique site is attributed to David de Rambures, Grand Master of the Crossbowmen of France, the highest military office of the time, the "Lord Rambures" in Shakespeare's Henry V.
