The underground city of Naours, better known as the Naours Caves, is a former chalk quarry that served as a refuge for the village's inhabitants during the wars and invasions that Picardy experienced.
For centuries, Picardy experienced numerous wars and invasions. The chalk quarries served as shelters for the inhabitants and their belongings, eventually becoming veritable underground refuges, "muches" (hiding places) in Picard.
The underground city, entirely excavated by human hands, consisted at its peak of 28 galleries and 300 rooms. Occupied from the Middle Ages until the 17th century, the underground passage fell into oblivion before being rediscovered in 1887 by Abbot Danicourt.
